For all of you out there who think that yard sales are the way to go, I am about to rock your world! The secret to great antique hunting isn’t getting up at the crack of dawn on a Saturday just to drive all over town hoping that you find an amazing treasure. No, no. It is much more efficient than that. And you can usually sleep in until a decent hour.
The secret….. Estate Sales! Now, if you are like me, you thought that an estate sale was where someone had passed away in a house and their family was trying to sell everything off so that they didn’t have to deal with it. Sometimes, yes. But more often than not, no.
Before this summer, I had never been to an estate sale. Just because of the reason listed above. I found it creepy. But then a couple of friends of mine decided to start their own estate sale business and I got educated.
Most estate sales occur because the owner of a home wants to clear it all out, usually because they are moving. The owners remove the items that they want to keep and the rest goes up for sale. Recently my friends, Jody and Jessica of Fabulous Finds, did an estate sale in downtown Davidson, our sweet little town. And this was the case. The owner had lots of great antiques to sell because they couldn’t take them all to their new place. There were wonderful items like a campaign chest I grabbed, an oversized basket, stained glass windows, vintage golf clubs, the list goes on and on. Somebody else snagged these leather wing chairs.
So if you want to find some great buys or furnish your home on a budget, this is the way to go. You can find estate sales in your area at www.estatesales.net or, if you are in the Davidson area, follow the signs for Fabulous Finds! You won’t be disappointed!
