I can’t understand why kitchen appliances are so expensive. Seriously. Why should something that slices vegetables cost a hundred dollars when I can do it just fine with a knife? Or to crush garlic, it costs $30?!
But then a piece of equipment comes along and it changes your world. And you don’t care how much it costs! That happened to me. And it is awesome!
I have complained about our blender almost since we bought it. It jammed. It never really got things smooth. Chunks of ice or fruit always splashed and plopped into my glass just when I thought everything was smooth.
Everyone raved about the Vitamix. But with a $600 price tag, I had to pass. I just dealt with the crappy blender we had.
Then I took a cooking class at the Culinary Institute of America in Napa, CA. And we used the Vitamix. And just as we were making a scrumptious pesto, it broke. I mean, completely dead. The chef I was learning from muttered under his breath, “That’s why I have a Food Ninja.” I never forgot that.
When the opportunity arose to buy a new blender because somehow (I have no idea how) the bowl cracked, I went straight for the Food Ninja. I was so excited when it arrived. It has suction cups on the bottom so it doesn’t vibrate off the counter and it’s heavy and it has all these great parts and pieces. Best of all, it DID NOT cost $600! It came with these awesome smoothie cups that even have their own travel lid. You can make the smoothie and pop on the lid and go!
So I came up with two super easy smoothies and I have been drinking them every day. It’s a great way to get your fruit in!
Target sells these great frozen fruit blends. In this one, I used the tropical fruit mix. It has bananas, peaches and mangos. Then I add some spinach and some water and blend it up. Delicious!
The other one is a strawberry blend. It has frozen strawberries, pineapple and mangos. I add a banana to it too and a little lemon juice. Then some water and blend. Yum!
These smoothies are a great, healthy and quick afternoon snack. Even my kids like them. And it saves me a lot of money and calories not having to stop in at Smoothie King!
