I could not be more excited right now! Guess what I’m doing…. I’m packing! I head out tomorrow for a fabulous trip to Sonoma, CA with my husband and some other friends. It is going to be a blast! The only down side, it has been requested that I only bring a carry on for this trip due to our tight timeline departing the airport tomorrow. Ugh! The cute outfits are a must! But I have figured out a way to pack only a carry on for a cross country trip. I wanted to share some of these tips with you.
My husband travels a good bit for work. I’ve learned a few things along the way. However, us ladies require a lot more, shall I say, “supplies” when we go somewhere. Guys don’t have makeup, jewelry, multiple pairs of shoes, hair products, etc. In order to fit that all in to one bag that can go in the overhead compartment is a little difficult. So here’s tip #1.
Always wear your heaviest/bulkiest shoes.
I know that you’ve been told to wear slip ons because of going through security. I get it. But if you want to save room in your suitcase, the flats take up a lot less room than cute booties. And with wearing your bulky shoes, you can also fit on a pair of comfy socks so you can kick off those shoes while in flight from one side of the country to the other.
Use all of your suitcase compartments.
Definitely maximize space when packing by using all of your pockets inside of your suitcase. You won’t believe how efficient it becomes when you do this. I know it sounds like one of those “duh” moments, but I used to think it would add bulk to the suitcase. It doesn’t. It actually allows me to squish more.
Hide the undies.
Have you ever seen those people going through security and they open up their suitcase to get their toiletry kit out and out falls their underwear? How embarrassing!!! Use one of those compartments in your suitcase to hide your underwear (and your jewelry) so it doesn’t fall out going through security. Or pack them at the bottom of the suitcase. Underwear doesn’t take up that much room so you can jam in in the bottom.
Put your toiletry kit on top.
You know you are going to have to pull out your 3 oz. bottles of liquid when going through security. Why not make it easy? When packing only a carry on for a cross country trip, you should make it easy on yourself by opening up your suitcase at security and allowing the liquids to go easily through the scanner. Then when you grab your suitcase again, set them back on top and zip it up. Easy peasy. And nobody in the security line can make a fuss about you holding things up. If you are crunched for time this will help too as you race to your gate.
And my last tip for how to pack only a carry on for a cross country trip is to
Buy those clear bottles and bring your own shampoo!
Because you need good hair when going to California. Truly.
Wherever you are going have safe travels and have a fabulous time! I can’t wait to share my adventures in wine country with you!
