I know what you are thinking….. I just renovated my house from top to bottom last year. (read about that here.) What could possibly be left to do? My answer is lots! So the One Room Challenge Fall 2017 is the perfect time to tackle those projects. And the first room that needs to be done is the powder room.
If you are new to this One Room Challenge event, it was started by the fabulous Linda at Calling It Home and it is now in it’s twelfth season. It is a 6 week adventure in decorating and the most amazingly talented people join in. Seriously. I look forward to it every time whether or not I’m participating. I have made over my guest room in the current house, my guest room in the old house, my old dining room and my old laundry room.
When we bought the house, the powder room was hideous. I mean just terrible. The paint was a faux finish in a lovely gold color with wallpaper over it. I’m not kidding. The pedestal sink was shell shaped and the toilet was so low to the floor you felt like you were doing squats when you used it. It all had to go. See for yourself.
When we decided to tear it all out and start over, I just left it a blank slate. All I wanted was a powder room that didn’t reek of 1993. But after a year, it’s just boring and beige and utilitarian. I want it to be stylish and bright. Here’s what I have to work with.
I love the sink in there. And a toilet is kind of just a toilet. So those items will stay. The rest is up for discussion. I am very excited about doing this because it’s been stewing in my brain for a while. I have a very specific thought about powder rooms. Are you ready? They should be the boldest rooms in your house. Why? Why not? Go for the gold. It’s a small space so even if you mess it up you can do it over at another time.
Wallpaper is a must in a powder room. It’s not getting the steam like a regular bathroom does due to the shower. And it a small space, it adds maximum impact. Here are my 2 wallpaper choices for in this space (subject to change as I pour over more wallpaper books!)
First up is the Thibaut wallpaper from their Monterey collection. I love the black background but I’m just not sure about the purple. My plan is to do some wainscoting on the bottom 2/3 of the room and paint it black so the black background of the paper is perfect.
Who doesn’t love a little Schumacher Chang Mai Dragon? It’s so vibrant and colorful!
Choices, choices…. But I now that I’m going to enjoy making my powder room a little more fun for the One Room Challenge Fall 2017.
