Who here has been to Myrtle Beach, SC? If you haven’t, it is the summer playground of the Carolinas. And right in the heart of Myrtle Beach is a cafe and bakery called Croissants. Since 1995, the owner of Croissants, Heidi Vukov, has been keeping folks coming back for more of her amazing pastries and her unique way of infusing Southern charm into her old world style of cooking. And now you can experience it for yourself in her new cookbook, Bonjour Y’all!
First off, the cover will make your mouth water. The clams look delicious! That was the first thing I decided I had to make. But before I could even get to the recipes, I was taken in by Heidi’s story. She moved to Myrtle Beach, SC from Pennsylvania, like many folks do, because she was enamored by the Carolina low country. But what makes her different is that she did it as a single mom with a plan. And so far, I would say that her plan has worked out!
Flipping through the book, I decided that I wanted to try everything in it. There are cocktails, seafood, desserts, and of course what you would expect from a place called Croissants, pastries and bread. I first indulged in the South Carolina Peach and Blueberry Sangria. Fantastic! Then I set out to make the Angry Bulls Bay Clams. (on the cover)
Well, I made several trips to the market where each time I was told that the clams were no good. For 2 weeks I tried to get my hands on some fresh clams until I finally gave up. I decided to make the recipe with Carolina shrimp instead. I have to say, it would be better with clams, but it was easy and flavorful. I can’t wait to make it again with clams.
My daughter and I plan to make the pumpkin cheesecake this fall and the Gruyere Puffs and She Crab Soup are calling my name for when the weather cools off. If you would like to purchase a copy of Heidi’s cookbook, you can do so below. (affiliate link)
