It has been called the most exciting 2 minutes in sports. The Kentucky Derby is what’s going on this weekend. Are you ready? Do you have your hat all picked out, your seersucker suit steamed and your julep cups polished? I know I do! Mint juleps are a tasty derby staple that aren’t for the faint of heart. Here is the simple recipe for wonderful mint juleps that you can sip while you cheer.
Given that my daughter rides horses, we have been watching the derby for the last 2 years. It is truly amazing what these animals are capable of. It is no wonder that the Kentucky Derby has a style all its own. And a beverage that is as strong and sweet as these race horses.
You will need:
1/2 C. extra fine sugar
1/4 C. water
1 shot of Kentucky Bourbon
In a small sauce pan, heat the water and the sugar and stir until dissolved. Add a tablespoon of chopped mint leaves and remove from heat. Allow to steep until cool. This is your mint simple syrup.
To make your juleps, muddle 2 mint leaves at the bottom of the cup. Fill with crushed ice. Add 1 shot of bourbon and 1 shot glass full of simple syrup. (I like mine a little sweeter) Garnish with a mint sprig.
That’s all there is to it!
